Quick checks
Before play, look for anything out of place: broken seats, loose boards, hot surfaces, spider webs, nests or debris. A ten-second glance catches many problems.
After storms, walk around and look for fallen limbs and damage.
Monthly in season
Tighten visible bolts, check swing chains and seats, test slides for cracks or heat damage and rake the surface level. Look under the set for hidden rot and mildew.
Wipe down plastic parts.
Each season
Check surfacing depth, replace worn hardware, look at the anchors and clean the structure. Re-torque bolts after the first cold snap and again in spring.
Check ropes and nets for wear.
Yearly
Do a thorough inspection and cleaning. Sand rough spots. Reseal or re-stain wood when it is dry or faded. Replace parts that show wear.
Consider a professional inspection for a fresh pair of eyes.
Keep records
A simple log of what you fixed and replaced helps you see patterns. Take photos before and after seasonal care.
It also shows when it is time to repair or replace.
A season-by-season plan
Spring: wash, inspect, tighten, top up the surface and refinish if needed. Summer: quick checks for heat on slides, hardware and wasps. Fall: clean up leaves, check anchors and seal the wood. Winter: brush off heavy snow and keep an eye out for damage.
Put reminders on the calendar so it becomes routine.
Know when to call for help
Rot, deep splits, bent frames, grinding hangers and cracked slides are all reasons to call. A quick professional inspection can save a lot of trouble.
