Swing Set Safety Guide for Families

Safety starts with the ground

Most playground injuries come from falls. A soft, deep surface under and around the equipment helps. Grass, dirt and hard surfaces do not cushion well.

Wood fiber, rubber mulch, poured rubber and playground turf are common choices, each with its own care needs.

Space around the set

Keep a clear use zone around the equipment, free of fences, trees, rocks, hoses and toys. Leave extra room in front of and behind swings and at the end of slides.

Public playground guidance is a useful reference for distances.

Hardware and structure

Check bolts, hangers, chains, seats, ladders and railings regularly. Look for loose parts, rust, splinters, cracks, sharp edges and gaps where a head or clothing could catch.

Anchor the set if the maker or installer recommends it.

Matching play to age

Equipment should match the child. Toddlers need low, simple play. Older kids need challenge. Mixed-age sets work best when zones are separate.

Teach kids how to use equipment: sit on swings, slide feet first and wait their turn.

Everyday habits

Supervise young children. Avoid drawstrings and scarves that can catch. Check for hot surfaces in summer. Keep the area free of broken glass and animal waste.

Look the set over after storms and before each season.

Make it a habit, not a project

Safety works best as a routine. Walk the area before play, rake the surface regularly, tighten hardware each season and talk to the kids about the rules. Small habits prevent most problems.

Keep a short list on the fridge or in a phone note: surface depth, bolts, chains, seats and clear zone.

When to stop and call someone

Stop use and get help if the frame moves, a post is soft or cracked, a chain link is bent, a hanger grinds or a seat is split. Do not wait for a better weekend.

We offer hands-on safety inspections for backyard and commercial sets.
