Swing Set Hardware Explained: Bolts, Hangers, Chains and More

Bolts and lag screws

Through-bolts clamp members together and are stronger than screws alone. Lag screws hold in thick lumber. Galvanized or stainless steel resists corrosion. Washers spread load and cap nuts cover sharp ends.

Longer, thicker bolts and quality finishes are worth the extra cost.

Swing hangers

The hanger connects the chain to the beam and has to rotate freely. Bearings or bushings reduce wear. Heavy-duty hangers are preferred for busy sets and for tire and saucer swings.

Check them for wear and replace them when they grind or loosen.

Chains, ropes and straps

Chains should be galvanized or coated and be the right gauge. Plastic coated chains protect little hands. Ropes and straps suit trapeze bars and rings but need regular checks for fraying.

Replace chains when links are worn thin or show cracks.

Brackets and anchors

Brackets reinforce joints and support beams. Ground anchors and footings keep the frame in place. Each should match the set and the soil.

Rusty or bent brackets should be replaced.

Quality and compatibility

Use hardware made for playground equipment. Mixing parts from different makers can create gaps or loads they were not designed for.

We can source and install matching parts for most equipment.

What good hardware looks like

Thick, galvanized or stainless bolts with washers and cap nuts, hangers with bearings that spin freely, chains that are uniform and smooth, and brackets that are not bent or rusty. Everything fits snugly.

Cheap hardware is often thin, painted rather than plated and rough at the edges.

Keep spares on hand

A small kit with extra bolts, washers, cap nuts and a couple of chain links makes seasonal care quick. Store it in a labeled container near the tools.

Take a photo of your hardware sizes so reordering is easy.

Quick answers

Is stainless steel worth it?

It resists corrosion best, which matters near the coast or in wet climates. Galvanized is a good, budget-friendly alternative.

Can I use hardware-store bolts?

Use hardware rated for the job. Ask us if you are unsure about sizes and grades.
