Low and safe
Toddler platforms should be low, with railings and gentle slopes. Short slides, wide steps and a ramp give them ways up and down they can manage by themselves.
A soft surface under and around the equipment makes tumbles less scary.
Swings for the littlest
Bucket or full-support seats keep babies and toddlers secure. They should be used with an adult close by. A belt swing can wait until the child has good balance and trunk control.
Keep toddler swings separate from older kids’ swings if possible.
Sensory and imaginative play
Sandboxes, a play kitchen, steering wheels, tunnels, bells and chimes, and water tables offer rich play. Textures and sounds encourage exploring.
Make sure small parts and openings are safe for little ones.
Shade and sightlines
Toddlers burn easily and tire in the heat. A shade sail or roof keeps them comfortable. Arrange the play area so you can see it from the patio or kitchen.
A bench or table nearby makes it easy to join in.
Plan for the next stage
Toddlers grow fast. Choose a set where you can add height, slides and climbers later, or a frame that can be converted. A modular layout saves money and effort.
We can plan the first stage and the next one together.
What toddlers actually do
Toddlers crawl, climb up and down steps, push, pour and imitate. A few steps, a ramp, a short slide, a sandbox and something to push or turn can keep them busy for a long time.
Make everything safe to reach and easy to supervise.
Convert as they grow
Choose a toddler deck that can be raised later, or a set where toddler features can be swapped for bigger ones. Bucket swings can be replaced with belt seats.
A modular approach saves money over the years.
Quick answers
Can toddlers use regular swings?
Not until they have the strength and balance. Use bucket seats with supervision until then.
How much room does a toddler set need?
Less than a big set, but still a clear surfaced zone around it. Our Yard Fit Planner can help.
